DeZago explains Schmidt endorsement

Former Attorney General Candidate Ralph DeZago sent this letter in explaining his support of Derek Schmidt, who defeated him in the primary.

I recently ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for Kansas Attorney General. Now, I wholeheartedly support my recent and successful competitor, Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt. Some people have asked me why I would support Derek now, so I thought I would answer.

Let’s dispel the “secret, under the table deal theory” first. I have no agreement with Derek, stated or implied, about getting anything from him in return for my endorsement. I am endorsing Derek simply because I sincerely believe that he is now the best candidate for the job—it’s just that simple. And anyone who paid attention to the Republican Primary knows that Derek and I, though coming at the race from having vastly different experiences, had no substantial philosophical differences.

Derek understands that the people of Kansas want to challenge the socialistic tendencies of Washington. He understands that Kansans want America’s borders protected. He understands that we are a nation of laws – laws obtained through a process of elected officials discussing, battling, compromising and eventually voting upon what’s best. It is not America’s nor Kansas’ way to follow the current president’s system of end-running around the elected public representatives by administrative fiat.

The current Attorney General will not engage in any activity calculated to upset Mr. Obama, despite the fact that he knows Kansans want to so engage.

So, folks, if you want an Attorney General who has YOUR interests at heart, do what I am doing and support Derek Schmidt.
