Democratic Secretary of State candidate and current State Senator Chris Steineger was fined $5,000 by the Kansas Ethics Commission for using funds from his legislative campaign to fund polls for a statewide office run.
The Associated Press reports:
The commission concluded Tuesday that state Sen. Chris Steineger improperly used his Senate campaign fund to pay for polls testing his name recognition ahead of a possible run for statewide office.
But the commission also found there was not enough evidence to conclude Steineger knowingly violated a law against asking lobbyists for contributions while the Legislature was in session.
Steineger, of Kansas city, Kan., said he’ll pay the fine quickly. He declined further comment after Tuesday’s hearing and said he’ll issue a statement.
I wonder if that statement will include something along the lines of dropping out of the race. This ruling does not bode well for someone trying to be the top elections administrator in the state.
