Bring on the debates!

The wait is finally over! After dodging several requests- and consequental attacks- from organizations hoping to host him and Todd Tiahrt for a Senate debate, Jerry Moran announced this afternoon his debate schedule.

But wait, don’t get too excited. The “schedule” includes a total of TWO debates, yes two. That’s about 1 percent of the number of debates proposed by groups throughout the state.

“Having held nearly 900 townhalls across the state listening and talking with Kansans about their issues and concerns, Jerry looks forward to continuing this discussion in the upcoming Senate debates,” said Dan Conston, Moran for Kansas Communications Director. “As we head into the final month before the primary more and more Kansans will be focused on which candidate has the strongest record and leadership for Kansas in the U.S. Senate. Jerry looks forward to the opportunity to discuss his record and vision.”

On Tuesday, July 6, Washburn University Professor and KSNT NBC Topeka’s Dr. Bob Beatty will moderate the first television debate in the U.S. Senate Republican primary. In addition to KSNT, the debate in Topeka is co-sponsored by and will also air on KSHB NBC Kansas City, KSN NBC Wichita, and KTMJ Fox Topeka. Other co-sponsors include the Topeka Capital Journal and the McPherson Sentinel. The second debate, July 13, in Wichita, will be hosted by the Wichita Chamber of Commerce.

While it’s nice to see Moran agreeing to step-up to the plate and actually interact with his opponent, it’s a little disappointing that he’s only agreeing to situations that are (1) controlled and in big cities and (2) out of his district completely. Us 1st District folks have seen little of Mr. Moran since the first of the year, which is sad because the more hands Tiahrt shakes and the more appointments he agrees to, the fewer votes Moran could see from his former constituents come August. This from the man who claims he visits each of his 69 counties each year.

But, none the less, bring on the debates! Let’s see what our Senate hopefuls are made of!

About Katie Stockstill-Sawyer

I am a city girl that is learning about life on the farm. I met and married a fourth-generation farmer, Derek. I am now a farmer's wife and country girl. The move has required a few changes and a lot of learning. But I wouldn't change my new life and all of the little lessons and surprises it provides.

  1. Will there be any way for those of us not in Topeka or KC to watch the debates?
