TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Republican House member from Tonganoxie is apologizing for questioning the legal status of a college student because of her “olive complexion.”
Rep. Connie O’Brien issued a statement Wednesday after the Kansas Democratic Party called her remarks during a committee meeting “blatant racism.”
The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that O’Brien says she’s not sorry for objecting to aid to illegal residents, but rather for the way she tried to get her point across.
O’Brien said at a House Federal and State Affairs Committee meeting that she ran across a woman seeking financial aid at a Kansas community college.
O’Brien said she knew the woman was in the country illegally because of her skin color.
In her statement O’Brien says she understands how her words could have been misconstrued.
